Why Argentinians Are Passionate About Football? Watch this video and see our experience of the Copa Libertadores and submerging ourselves into one of the biggest passions the Argentinians have: Football.
Argentinians are extremely passionate especially when it comes to football.
But for me as a Filipino, I didn’t really understand all this fuss for a football game.
To give some context on how important this game was, the two biggest rivalry teams
in Argentina, Boca and River, were playing in the finals of
South America’s most important soccer club competition, for the first time in history.
This game got canceled twice in Argentina because the fans became uncontrollable.
The anticipation was intense!
We watched the game with Agustin, a local and a River Plate fan.
He taught us the chants and how to cheer for the team, “Marco and Agustin singing”
And when River scored their winning goal. He yelled his heart out with joy, called his father, and cried.
He took us to the center of the city, the Obelisco, and joined thousands of other Argentinians,
singing, dancing, and expressing their triumph.
It was crazy, there was a point where it didn’t make sense for us.
We didn’t really understand why a person would cry for a football game.
“It’s a family tradition. My dad made me a river fan. I’m from the river since I was little, in fact I just called my dad and we both cried. It’s a passion we have in common”
Then it started to make sense, when we saw families, dads with their kids, celebrating by the Obelisco.
This is culture. It was handed from generations to generations.
Forged with a strong connection and love from their parents and family.
This is why Argentinians are passionate.
We realized that there are things that you won’t really understand
until you experience it until you live it.
This is why we travel. To experience real culture and to learn from it.

Los argentinos son extremadamente apasionados, especialmente cuando se trata de fútbol.
But for me as a Filipino, I didn’t really understand all this fuss for a football game.
Para dar un poco de contexto sobre la importancia de este juego, los dos rivales más grandes
de Argentina, Boca y River ,jugaban en las finales de la competición de clubes de fútbol
más importante de Sudamérica, por primera vez en la historia.
Este juego se canceló dos veces en Argentina porque los fanáticos se volvieron incontrolables.
¡La expectativa fue intensa!
Vimos el partido con Agustín, un local fanático de River Plate.
Él nos enseñó canciones de cancha y cómo animar al equipo, “Marco y Agustín cantando”.
Y cuando River anotó su gol ganador. Gritó con su corazón, llamó a su papá y lloró.
Nos llevó al centro de la ciudad, el Obelisco, nos unimos a miles de otros argentinos,
cantando, bailando y expresando su triunfo.
Fue una locura, hubo un punto en el que no tenía sentido para nosotros.
Realmente no entendíamos por qué una persona lloraría por un partido de fútbol.
“Es una historia familiar. Mi padre me hizo fanático del río.
Soy de River desde que era pequeña, de hecho, acabo de llamar a mi padre y ambos lloramos. Es una pasión que tenemos en común”
Then it started to make sense, when we saw families, dads with their kids, celebrating by the Obelisco.
Esto es cultura. Fue pasado de generación en generación.
Forjado con una fuerte conexión y amor de sus padres y familiares.
Por eso los argentinos son apasionados.
Nos dimos cuenta de que hay cosas que realmente no vas a entender
hasta que las experimentes, hasta que las vivas.
Por eso viajamos. Para experimentar la verdadera cultura y aprender de ella.
